When to Start Feeding Deer Before the Rut: A Texas Whitetail Timeline
Jun 01, 2026
The rut is the most exciting and unpredictable time in the whitetail calendar — bucks abandon their normal patterns, does go on alert, and hunters across Texas start burning vacation days. But the hunters who consistently kill mature bucks aren't just showing up during the rut. They've been building a feeding program since summer that sets the stage for everything that follows.
Summer Feeding: July through September
Summer is when antler growth happens. Bucks in hard antler are still in bachelor groups and following predictable daily patterns — which makes summer the ideal time to get your feeders running, pattern individual deer on trail cameras, and inventory your herd.
Start running protein feed or corn in early July, with your feeder timer set for morning and late afternoon. You want deer locked into visiting your feeder sites on a schedule before hunting season ever opens. This is also the right time to get new blinds set up — give deer 60 to 90 days to get used to any new structures before you climb in them.
Early Season: October
Archery season in Texas typically opens in early October, when deer are still in predictable summer patterns. Bucks are moving, but mostly at night or in the last minutes of shooting light. Keep your feeders running on schedule and stay disciplined — avoid over-pressuring your hunting areas and let the deer continue their normal routines.
This is when patience pays. Hunt the does and younger bucks early in the season if you want action. For mature bucks, save your best sits for the pre-rut.
Pre-Rut: Late October through Early November
In most of Texas, the pre-rut starts heating up in late October. Bucks begin scraping and rubbing, testosterone is rising, and daylight movement increases noticeably. This is one of the best hunting windows of the year — bucks are becoming less cautious but the chaos of the full rut hasn't arrived yet.
Keep feeders running. Does are still heavily dependent on food sources, and bucks will be checking and following does throughout the day. Position your blind between doe feeding areas and bedding cover for maximum activity.
Peak Rut: Mid-November
Peak rut in central and south Texas typically falls between November 10 and 25, though it varies by region and year. During peak rut, bucks may abandon feeder sites entirely as they chase does across the property. Don't get discouraged if your feeder camera goes quiet — this is normal.
Hunt doe areas, scrape lines, and travel corridors during peak rut. Your feeder is less important as an attractant during this window, but it keeps does in the area — and bucks will follow.
Post-Rut: Late November through December
After the breeding push, bucks are exhausted and hungry. Feeder sites become critical again as bucks return to food sources to recover body weight before winter. This is one of the best times to kill a big buck — he's predictable, hungry, and needs calories.
Keep your feeder stocked and your blind set up through December. Some of the biggest bucks of the year are killed during the post-rut when hunters have already packed up and gone home.
